there is a hell of a lot of poetry inside the box above my head

A video: Great Divide

And a poem about the video:

fear of commitment

we can conquer this
great divide,
they say.
but i have not been to africa
and i have not seen them suffer,
the children,
and i have not seen the lust
for life
that they have, despite
their death sentence.
me? i find hope in the
smalls hands of those orphans
and their impossibly
white teeth--teenage celebrities
and middle-aged women
pay hundreds of dollars
to achieve that pristine gleam
i find hope in the breaths between
the only partially intelligible words
of this song.
i am inspired
and optimistic
but i am the caricature
of the informed yet sheltered youth
sitting in her comfortable dorm room
with good intentions
and a checking account
which contains over twelve hundred dollars.
today i spent roughly two hundred of them
on christmas
presents
because
i do not know how to make
a cause or campaign
the center of my life
or
do i just not want to?

*****

World Aids Day is tomorrow, December 1st.

If you like the song, you can buy it on iTunes for $.99, and every penny goes towards the HIV research center in Soweto, South Africa.

And apparently I'm just bursting at the seams with poetry lately.

It'll pass, I promise.
